The journey by train to Basel

On the banks of the Rhine, not far from its source, lies the charming student city of Basel, at the point where Switzerland borders France and Germany. The city breathes an international atmosphere and is also known as a center of modern art: with a number of renowned museums and a famous art fair, Basel can easily compete with centers like Berlin and Bilbao. A special attraction is the so-called "Rheinschwimmen": in warm weather, residents dive en masse into the clean river, letting their belongings drift behind them in a Wickelfisch. That's certainly an experience to try! Centuries ago, famous people from the Low Countries also came to Basel: the learned humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam breathed his last breath there and lies buried in the Cathedral.

Basel is easily accessible by train from the Netherlands and Belgium. You can reach the city with one change in approximately 8 hours from Amsterdam. You need to change once in Germany on the way. With the night train, you can even travel directly from the Netherlands to Basel. Basel is not only a nice city for a city trip, you can also visit the surrounding natural areas and cities from Basel.
